Shelly was frantic. She’d hated leaving Jimmy and Aaron behind to be destroyed, but she had to look out for herself above all else. They’d served her faithfully, but she could easily make more slaves. She just had to avoid that detective until she had the chance. She wouldn’t stop at just three this time, either. She’d build a small army of subservient vampires, and then she’d hunt him down like a dog! Stupid fucking cop… how in the hell had he survived their attack, anyway?

Shelly bolted upright, suddenly aware that she was not alone. It couldn’t be him… she hadn’t considered that he might make one of her boys talk, but even so, she wasn’t stupid enough to go back to the house they’d been using. Neither one of them was supposed to know about this place!

Blending into the shadows, she crept closer to the door. Whoever it was, even if it was that detective, they were in for a shock. He didn’t even know what he was capable of yet; he was purely physical. She had enough tricks of her own to get the better of him.

She hoped.

Suddenly, a fist smashed through the wall and grabbed her. Shelly screamed reflexively, and then slashed at the wrist, embarrassed at her outburst. The hand maintained its grip, and pulled, smashing her through the wall.

Slightly stunned, Shelly looked up into the face of Grant Mercer. “Hello, Shelly,” he said coldly.

“H-how..,” she gasped.

“I smelled you,” Grant replied. He was getting better at using his newly-enhanced abilities.

Shelly saw him reach into his coat, and she had no doubt what he was about to pull out. In desperation, she slashed at his face. He instinctively moved to block her attack, loosening his grip enough for her to slip free.

Grant was unharmed by the attack, but cursed himself for letting her get loose. As he charged after her into the darkened room, he saw her running toward a window, her body contorted unnaturally. By the time she leapt through the window in a shower of broken glass, it was not a young woman, but a large black wolf that emerged from the other side. Running as fast as he could, Grant jumped through the window after her.

Grant landed like a panther on the ground, three floors below. He saw the wolf rounding the corner. Running after it, Grant was surprised when he rounded the corner himself and saw an empty alley. Shelly’s scent was all around, however. In the split second it took him to realize what had happened, she had struck. A shard of blackness seemed to dart from the shadows, striking Grant hard in the back of the head. It didn’t draw blood, but the blow was much harder than any he had received from the other vampires. Dodging subsequent shadow attacks as best he could, Grant tried to focus and isolate her scent, to pinpoint exactly where she was.

There! He had her. Shrugging off a shadowy tentacle, Grant lunged for her. As he hit the brick wall, his arm seemed to sink into the shadow several inches.
